Poll shows most Americans are worried about the current nursing shortage.Many hospitals depend on travel nursing to address the current nursing shortage.Americans are intensely aware of the current nursing shortage and believe it is a serious problem, according to a national poll. The poll found that three in four Americans believe the current nursing shortage is a serious health care problem, and people believe it will negatively impact the quality of care they get in the nation's hospitals. In fact, 81 percent of Americans realize that there is a current nursing shortage and 65 percent believe the current nursing shortage is either a major problem or a crisis.93 percent agree that the current nursing shortage jeopardizes the quality of health care in the United States. Seniors, aged 55 and older, are particularly sensitive to the impact of the current nursing shortage on the quality of the health care system.
75 percent are concerned that the current nursing shortage could impact their individual health care, and 65 percent of younger Americans experience anxiety over the current nursing shortage. The poll also found that most Americans find nurses' opinions on health matters to be credible and that they overwhelmingly trust, respect and admire nurses. Nursing jobs are widely available and most Americans have little or no idea about how much money nurses earn. There is little recognition that average nurse salaries are competitive with those of other professions. New areas, such as travel nursing, are developing in the nursing profession to address the current nursing shortage.
