Proponents of a health and fitness theorize that many overweight people may be "insulin resistant," that is, the cells that convert carbohydrates into glucose (which becomes energy) do not work correctly. While most diet experts say that not everyone who has a weight problem is insulin resistant, low carb advocates claim it is more likely than not.

The common goal for National Senior Health and Fitness Day is to help keep older Americans healthy and fit. National Senior Health & Fitness Day is the nation's largest annual health promotion event for older adults. Local organizations can host a variety of health and fitness related activities. Event activities included fitness walks, low-impact exercises, health screenings and health information workshops.

Some specific objectives of National Senior Health and Fitness Day are to make exercise fun, to increase awareness of the benefits of a regular exercise program for older adults, and to encourage all older adults to take advantage of the many health and fitness programs offered in their communities.

To help older adults stay motivated after National Senior Health & Fitness Day and throughout the year, an awards program has been established. This unique awards program is open to adults age 50 and over, and recognizes older adult fitness achievements in a wide variety of physical activities such as aerobics, bicycling, group exercise, swimming, and walking.
