Our kids health can be compromised by the very activities that we view as great modern advancements. There have always been great benefits to kids health from the traditional outdoor activities of summer's past. Swimming, hiking and informal team sports kept children physically active. Nowadays, kids are involved in more sedate activities, like browsing the Web or channel surfing the TV, as ways to pass the dog days of summer. When school bells ring once again, however, kids need to be involved in more active pastimes than dodging detention. Now, children of all ages are being urged to take a more active role in planned physical activities that promote both teamwork and fitness.
Kids health and fitness programs are greatly enhanced when team sports like field hockey, soccer, and basketball enable them to stay physically active on a regular basis. The current trend of adolescents toward a more sedentary lifestyle could contribute to such future health problems as heart disease. And there are psychological as well as physical benefits to keeping fit. Building self-esteem and camaraderie and developing problem-solving skills in a team setting are a few of the bonuses kids receive through team sports.
Parents promote kids health by teaching children about the importance of regular physical activity. According to a recent U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Kids Health, half of all kids between 12 and 21 are not physically active on a regular basis, and daily enrollment in physical education classes has declined an astonishing 41% among high school students in the last five years. Team sports can combat the downward spiral of an increasing population of inactive kids and a potential decline in kids health.
